Exclusive Entrevista: Julissa Bermudez

Julissa Bermudez

Keep your eyes locked on Julissa Bermudez because she won’t be fading from view anytime soon. The Queens native landed on “The Roof” as Mun 2’s bilingual host and nested a career as the first Latina host on BET’s “106 & Park” back in 2005. Now, Julissa is remixing her career with help from the most krump-tastic, hard-hitting, tricked-out dance show.

The 24 year-old Dominicana will be exercising her VJ skills on MTV’s pre-show for “America’s Best Dance Crew,” premiering on July 24th at 8:30 pm EST. Besides bringin’ the flava to the second season of the MTV hit, Julissa is prepping to make a splash on the big screen with her role in the upcoming dance drama “Make It Happen.”

We had a charla with the industry renegade. She dished with us on taking over Hollywood (who could turn this chica down for a job — look at those lashes!) and the importance of giving back to la comunidad.

Read the rest below the hood!

How does it feel to be signed-on to host MTV’s pre-show for ‘America’s Best Dance Crew’?

I honestly had no idea how big this show was! For example, yesterday I was shopping and this older man, who recognized me from B.E.T asked me, ‘Hey when is your new show coming out?’ And [I mentioned the show to him] and he literally stopped in his tracks. He was like, ‘Oh my God! I love that show! My kids love that show!’ I was in shock and I thought to myself, ‘Hey, this is going to be a great opportunity.’

Are you going to be working closely with the show’s host Mario Lopez?

Actually yes, once we head out to L.A. to tape the grand finale pre-show we are going to be getting his point-of-view on the season’s outcome. The fact that he is such a cutie and all the girls love him is just the perfect click. It is definitely going to be a good time. We are going to be breaking down all of the drama and bochinche!

Speaking of fine men and dancing, how do you get down on the dance floor?

Oh! Anything that is merengue or bachata I can break it down for you step-by-step! Dance has been in my life since I was a little girl. I took ballet lessons and never looked back.

Your big-screen acting debut in, “Make It Happen” is also centered on dance. How did that role come about?

I just finished shooting the film in Canada. It is going to be nice to have people see me in a different light. People are going to see me acting, singing, and dancing. I am literally going to be a triple threat.

What is your role in the film?

I basically play the queen-bee. Mary Elizabeth Winsted plays the bright-eyed dancer that moves out to Chicago to attend a prestigious dance school, but she doesn’t end up getting into the school. She starts working at a nightclub, which is where she meets me. Let’s just say I am not so nice in this movie [laughs]. People are going to love to hate me.

How is it transitioning from hosting live television to acting on film?

When I actually decided that I wanted to be in the business, I always pictured myself on Broadway. That was my thing! Then I saw the opportunity to be in front of the camera as a host and I fell in love with it. It was my chance to represent for my culture because there weren’t a lot of Latina hosts on television when I was growing up. Now I am trying to manage both things and seeing how it goes. I picture myself as a Latina Kelly Ripa.

How do you manage to keep that balance and stay true to your roots?

I think it is important to give back. I visited the Dominican Republic to help with the hurricane Noel devastation. I try to help out as much as possible. With Soles United we were able to give back and donate shoes to people affected by the disaster. I also just signed on for a program called L.I.F.E, which stands for ‘Latinos In Fashion And Entertainment.’ The program reaches out to young high school kids and teaches them that they can make it in this business, and it doesn’t necessary have to be in front of the camera.

What advice would you give our youth about making it in the industry?

Honestly, I would say try to get better at your craft. Never give up because there is going to be a lot of rejection out there. You have to have a strong character to make it, so just stay secure in who you are. If you have determination, you will get where you need to go.

It sounds like this bangin’ beauty knows what she is talking about! Stay tuned for the release date of her upcoming film and don’t forget to catch her on “America’s Best Dance Crew” pre-show later this month.
