Juanes ain't the only artist that can throw a Colombian peace concert. Shakira is one-upping her Colombian counterpart by participating in a series of events and concerts to promote la paz en su patria. Shakira arrived in Leticia, Colombia on July 20th to kick off a series of movements against Colombian guerilla acts causing havoc in the country's remote areas. The superstar got things shakin' by singing the Colombian national anthem alongside Presidents Uribe of Colombia, Lula of Brazil and García of Peru.
When asked to speak to the crowd of 20,000 people, Shakira said:
Today is a historic day, we Colombians are making history today because we unite, unite our voices in a single shout: a shout for liberty! Liberty for each and every Colombian – for those being held in captivity, and also for those who have succumbed to the service of violence. Liberty for all the displaced, who don’t have the right, or the possibility of choosing where to live – liberty for all, that is why we are here today. This is the most important, and largest demonstration in the history of Colombia, and I think we should be very proud of this, proud that so many of us are here, and that we are coming together, uniting. Colombia is changing, we are changing – today Colombia is living in a time of social activism and commitment.
After moving la gente with inspirational palabras, Shakira performed a duet with fellow Colombiano and Latin Grammy Award-winner Carlos Vives.
We love to see artists that use el poder y la influencia for better causes than a launching a new fragrance or clothing line. Go team Shakira! [Sony BMG]
