Sick of the funky electro hip-hop ritmos of the Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow" yet?

If you are craving a headphone break from the B.E.P's futuristic jump-off (and the green alien lady on the cover of their new album) then get hooked into the colorful bilingual flow that is Da'Zoo. The grupo comprised of Charly Rodríguez, Freddie Lugo, Raul Quezada, and Elizabeth Fuentes mirrors the back-in-the-day vibes of DJ Disco Wiz mixed with a heavy punch of reggae, pop, and freestyle. Besides shining luz on the calle slang word "Chitu," the foursome have also cut a fresh new remix of the B.E.P's chart breaking hit.
We caught up with Charly and Yo-Fred to find out more about how they met and what artists are chillin' on their I-pod ahora! Catch the entire interview right under the fold!
How did you guys meet and start making music?
Yo-Fred: I met Charly at the university and we just started making music. Then we met Raul by watching him perform on a cover band. We just met Eli on the street - you know also singing on a cover band. We all agreed that we were sick of covering other people's music and just decided to do our own thing.
Did the music making process flow organically for you guys?
Charly: It's just like anything you try for the first time. We had to learn from each other and bounce around ideas. We are still developing as a band even now.
Yo-Fred: From the very beginning we started making a new sound. Totalmente otra cosa. Little by little we just started getting our own sound and style.
How would you define your style?
Yo-Fred: Hermano, everything we put out is based on our experiences and just wanted to make people chill out and enjoy the music. Obviously, coming from Puerto Rico has also influenced our style because we throw in a lot of slang and stuff like that.
Are you influenced by Puerto Rican artists doing there thing? Like Calle 13 and Don Omar?
Yo-Fred: You know we all have our own flow. We don't compare ourselves or try to follow their steps. We look up to artists that represent world music. We are open to all kinds of different sounds. We really don't look up to other artists because we are doing our own thing.
Charly: We are just standing on different street corners.
What groups are you really feeling right now? Who is on your I-pod's?
Charly: I can't really say for sure because I listen to genres not artists.
Yo-Fred: Right now? The Gorillaz, Radiohead, and Bob Marley.
