Last week, we reported on Eva Longoria's passionate partnership with Shine Global for the production of the upcoming documentary "The Harvest." The actress and longtime activist recently caught up with us about her dedication to spreading awareness and creating a positive change against harmful working conditions for children. Watch the official trailer and catch her entire exclusive interview right below!
What made you decide to get involved with Shine Global and “The Harvest”?
I have been advocating for farm worker rights for many years and was shocked to discover the travesties being done toward the children that feed America. Many people, like myself, do not know this is still happening in our own backyard and I was approached by Shine Global to help bring this project more attention to this cause and funding to complete the film.
Why do you think the reality of child and farm laborers is seldom discussed in the news?
I think many people don’t talk about child farm workers because of two reasons: 1) they don’t know it is even happening and 2.) they think this is happening to illegal immigrants only. These are American Children, born in the USA who fed our country but often go unfed themselves.
What do you think needs to take place on a national level to help break the silence and assist these affected communities?
It starts with caring...we need people to care that this is happening. This is not an immigration issue, this is a labor and human rights issue. These kids deserve a chance to succeed just like everyone else, and unfortunately they are caught in a cycle of poverty that is hard to escape. These children are pulled out of school early and start school late which leads to a large dropout rate and a destiny of poor living without an education.
How do you think this documentary directly speaks to the Latino experience in the U.S.?
I think this story relates to all immigrants in this country, not just Latinos. Our country was founded by immigrants from all over the world who came here looking for a better life. These people have left their homes, their families, their languages, their cultures, to try to make a better living for themselves and others. The work they do is honorable and hard and we should treat them better.
How can viewers help the cause?
People can help us complete funding for the filming by donating to Shine Global, which is a non-profit organization that produces films to bring awareness to the exploitation and abuse of children all over the world.
