ESPN's Bob Griese has been suspended for a week and ordered to make a public apology after making racist remarks about Colombian NASCAR driver Juan Pablo Montoya. While commentating during Saturday's Ohio State-Minnesota football game, a promotion for NASCAR pictured the top five drivers, yet Montoya wasn't included. When fellow broadcaster Chris Spielman asked why Montoya wasn't pictured, Griese responded "(He's) out having a taco." Griese later apologized during the broadcast calling the comment "inappropriate."
When Montoya was asked to respond to Griese's remark, he issued this statement:
"I don't even know who (Griese) is. Somebody mentioned it to me. I don't really care, to tell you the truth. I could say I spent the last three hours eating tacos, but I was actually driving the car." [Latina]
ESPN is losing broadcasters left and right. Griese's comment occurred just one day after the network fired Steve Phillips for having an affair with a 22 year-old production assistant.
