So, we all know who the big winners were at last night's Oscars, and quite frankly we're not too familiar with the movies that won, or even a lot of the ones that were nominated.  Okay, eso es mentira.  We loved 'Avatar' and a couple of the other nominees ('Up In The Air' and 'Precious'), but it looks like we'll have to add 'The Blind Side' and 'The Hurt Locker' to the ol' Netflix...

We were happy to see, though, that there were not one but TWO películas de Latino America nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category este año!  'El Secreto De Sus Ojos,' from Argentina, took home the prestigious award, beating out films from Peru, Israel, France and Germany.  Now that's one that's definitely going on Netflix!  La película, which is set in Buenos Aires, and stars Ricardo Darín and Soledad Villamil, tells the story of an unsolved murder mystery interspersed con una historia de amor.

Director Juan José Campanella accepted his golden trophy at last night's ceremony with a hilariously humble observation:

It is on behalf of a crew and cast that compromise mostly of people that I love and that are very close to my heart that I want to thank the Academy for not considering Na'vi a foreign language, first of all.

The director also spoke with The Wall Street Journal, to which he spoke about the impact of an Argentinean movie winning an Oscar:

For an Argentine movie, the bolster is incomparable. For the country's film making in general, I don't know if one prize means too much. But the sum of an Oscar, plus the recurring presence of various movies in important film festivals around the world, starts creating an interest to see films from our country. It’s not an isolated movie, but an entire cinematography that creates expectations.

Felicidades! Watch his Oscar "Thank You" speech here!

The BMI Awards were held at Las Vegas' Bellagio hotel last night where Colombian Rocker Juanes was the recipient of the 2010 President's Award.

The always humble humanitarian took stage with 5 members of his band, and delivered this very modest speech:

"Like all my colleagues here, I've been writing ever since I can remember. It's a pleasure to share this moment with all of you. "

He continued:

"I remember the first meeting I had with BMI, some 12 years ago, when I knew nothing of the music industry, and they walked me through all this."

The rocker also performed acoustic renditions of his hits,  and invited Mexican singer Ximena Sarinana to share in the duet "Fotografia" and friend Juan Luis Guerra to sing "Odio por Amor."

CNN news anchor Rick Sanchez is no stranger to Twitter, so it makes sense that he was asked to host the 2nd Annual Shorty Awards on Wednesday evening, the first event of its kind to honor the best producers of short, real-time content.

Sanchez, or @RickSanchezCNN on Twitter, was born in Cuba and grew up in Florida. By 22, he was the youngest television anchor in the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale TV market at the time and is recognized for being one of the first news anchors to incorporate Twitter to interact with the audience.

The gregarious Sanchez kept the audience chuckling through the Shorty Awards ceremony held at the TimesCenter in New York, announcing that "looking at [Brazilian singer] Ivete Sangalo, the winner for the Music category, makes you want to samba."

Sangalo, who wasn't present at the "Oscars of Twitter" to receive her award, shared this acceptance video at the ceremony:

The Brazilian superstar also tweeted a direct link of the the Shorty Awards live stream to her 600,000+ fans so that they could share the honor with her:

"Perdeu a cerimônia do Shorty Awards??? Assista aqui transmissão completa do Oscar do Twitter http://bit.ly/c4wqLI" - @ivetesangalo

Although Sangalo wasn't able to be in New York for the ceremony, she will be returning on September 4th to perform at Madison Square Garden. The show will be the recording of her fourth DVD.

With a Latino host and multiple nominees representing at the Shorty Awards, I was on a quest to see other examples of positive Latino influence. Luckily, I found that in Special Award winner Carel Pedre aka @carelpedre:

'I dedicate this to my country Haiti,' said Carel Pedre after receiving a special 'humanitarian' award for quake-tweeting during and after the disaster. Pedre's efforts on Twitter helped to save lives and assist family members to locate lost loved ones.

Ever the humanitarian, Haitian radio host Pedre has been tweeting resources and news during the Chile earthquake and even spent most of Wednesday tweeting in Spanish. Pedre loves talking to people and exchanging ideas. According to his web site, Pedre feels it's important to share his perspective on Twitter as a Haitian who was born, raised and educated in the poorest country in the western hemisphere.

In a statement given by Gary Kebbel, the Knight Foundation’s journalism program officer, Kebbel stated that “Twitter has emerged as one of the most effective, ubiquitous and resilient means of communication in times of crisis and turmoil."

The Knight Foundation is an American private, non-profit foundation dedicated to promoting journalism and a Shorty Awards sponsor.

The Nominees for the 67th Annual Golden Globes were announced this morning by Justin Timberlake and nuestra actriz Española favorita, Penelope Cruz, was nominated in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture category for Nine.

Her competition in the category includes: Vera Farmiga (Up In The Air), Anna Kendrick (Up In The Air), Mo'Nique (Precious), and Julianne Moore (A Single Man).

We'd say her chances look pretty good! Cruz is, after all, an Oscar winner! She received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in Vicky Christina Barcelona. Do you think she'll take home the Golden Globe for her sexy role as a mistress in Nine? The one thing we do know is that the sexy Javier Bardem is sure to be her date! [Golden Globes]

The results are in for los Premios People En Español.  Ganadores in the various categories included Best Telenovela: 'Mañana es Para Siempre' y como Mejor Actriz, Edith González de 'Doña Bárbara' y Fernando Colunga como Mejor Actor en 'Mañana es Para Siempre.'  Mejor Cantante Pop went to Luis Fonsi, who also won awards for Best Album and Song of the Year.  Nailing Mejor Artista Tropical were bachateros Aventura, while Best Urban Artist went to Daddy Yankee.

We had our eyes peeled on the red carpet though, to see who had el mejor look de la noche.  Take a look at our faves below!

Lili Estefan looked good enough to eat (we think Raúl de Molina agreed!), as she showed off her famosas piernas con un vestido corto.

Miguel Varoni y Catherine Siachoque get definite props for being la pareja con más estilo de la noche.  Check out her super sexy heels!

We're digging the asymmetrical necklines on los vestidos de Dominican beauty Amelia Vega, news maven  Maria Elena Salinas and the age-defying Charytin.

Our eyes were drawn to these ladies who looked listas para las fiestas de navidad in their festive vestidos.  Canela Ferro parece un regalito with the oversized bow detail on her dress, 'Primer Impacto' host Bárbara Bermudo made un impacto in her dazzling silver dress, y actriz Colombiana Maritza Rodriguez rocked a classy true blue vestido with black lace detalles.

Este viernes pasado, Aventura were granted the key to the city of Houston, TX, during a sold-out show.  El grupo bachatero from the Bronx were handed the key by the mayor, Bill White, y el día Dec. 4, was proclaimed "Aventura Day."

Congrats!  Este parece ser el año de Aventura, as the band has raked up the most nominations for los Premios Lo Nuestro, in addition to selling out several concerts on their current tour, and even performing for President Obama earlier in the year.  El grupo will also appear on el show de Cristina esta semana to put un punto final to the rumors of their possible break up.  Con un año tan exitoso, we sure hope the rumors are false!

Jenny performed her new single "Louboutins" at the AMA's last night. And while the song was met with mixed reviews, her spill during the performance was PRICELESS! It started well, with Jenny climbing up her dancer's backs.

And then she went for the JUMP!

And she's UP!

But she couldn't quite land it!

Did you Laugh out Loud?!!! We DEF LMAO'D!!!!

The bachata boys from the BX definitely held their own at last night's American Music Awards. Aventura took home the award for Favorite Latin Music Artist.  A nosotros nos parece bien merecido, and it was in a category with some top contenders!

Aventura was up against Luis Fonsi (who seems to be winning a lot of awards these days), and chart-topping reggaeton duo, Wisin y Yandel. La competencia was hot indeed, but there could only be one winner.  El AMA went to bachata kings, Aventura!  Felicitaciones!!
